Generate an n8n Webhook-based AI workflow from your OpenAPI spec
This n8n automation workflow exposes a webhook that takes an OpenAPI specification (inline or by URL), sends it to an external AI design endpoint, optionally validates and stores the result via HTTP APIs, and returns a packaged response containing documentation and a generated n8n workflow JSON skeleton.
What this workflow does
- Accepts a POST request through an n8n Webhook containing an OpenAPI spec (inline) or an OpenAPI URL, plus generation preferences.
- Validates the incoming payload, then extracts context such as workflow name and authentication preference to prepare downstream HTTP call URLs.
- Optionally fetches the OpenAPI document when a spec URL is provided, using an external HTTP call. If the fetch fails, the workflow continues.
- Calls an external AI design endpoint with the prepared context to generate a proposed n8n workflow structure.
- Validates and stores the generated design by calling external HTTP endpoints—one to validate the workflow design and another to store/register the integration.
- Returns a final response package to the webhook caller with status flags, documentation, and an assembled workflow JSON skeleton, using the appropriate HTTP status code.
Use cases
- SaaS integration building: turn OpenAPI docs from your API into an n8n automation starter workflow.
- Automation engineering: generate a draft workflow structure quickly, then run your validation/storage endpoints before onboarding teams.
- API partner onboarding: accept an OpenAPI URL from partners and produce standardized n8n webhook-based workflows with generated documentation.
Technical details
- Nodes used: if, code, wait, webhook, sticky note, http request.
- Primary mechanics: webhook-driven request handling, conditional OpenAPI fetch, external AI workflow design call, and external validation/storage via HTTP Request steps.
- Setup: replace placeholder httpbin.org URLs in the validation-related code with your real OpenAPI fetcher, AI workflow designer, validator, and storage endpoints; add authentication headers/credentials where required.
