Approve sensitive n8n actions by phone—human “yes” or “no” starts the workflow
This n8n workflow calls a person’s iPhone to request approval for high-stakes actions (like a deploy, refund, or sending an email). It reads the question aloud, waits for the spoken response, and then routes the workflow based on the result.
What this workflow does
- Configure me lets you set the Call Me number, a sender name, and the approval request (the question).
-
Ask by phone uses an AI Agent with the Call Me MCP server as its only tool. It:
- Writes a single yes/no question
- Places the phone call
- Waits while the iPhone rings
- Returns one of: approved, rejected, or no_answer (including the transcript)
- Route by answer sends each outcome to its own branch.
- If nobody picks up (no_answer), a standalone MCP Client sends the same question as a push text in the same thread.
Use cases
- Require human sign-off before deploying to production
- Get explicit approval before processing a refund
- Confirm before sending sensitive customer emails
- Guardrail AI automation with real-time, spoken approvals
Technical details
- n8n version: n8n 2.x (MCP Client nodes are built in)
- Setup: Add an OpenAI credential to OpenAI Chat Model, then run as provided
- Nodes/stack: set, no op, switch, sticky note, manual trigger, and n8nn8n-nodes-langchainagent
- Phone integration: Call Me iPhone app with an active subscription (demo line answers “yes” automatically; real phone requires subscription)
Customization
Swap the manual trigger for a webhook, schedule, or Execute Workflow Trigger so other workflows can request approval by phone.
