Daily Azure IoT Hub Fleet Health Report—AI Executive Summary + Gmail Email
Run a daily health check on your Azure IoT Hub devices and automatically receive an OpenAI-generated executive report by email—highlighting online, offline, stale (inactive > 24 hours), and disabled devices with actionable recommendations.
What this workflow does
This n8n automation runs every day at 9:00 AM to assess your full IoT fleet and turn the results into a readable, leadership-friendly HTML summary.
- Builds a short-lived Azure IoT Hub SAS token from your provided IoT Hub connection string.
- Queries the Azure IoT Hub device registry using the device query REST API to retrieve device status details such as connection state, last activity time, and reported properties.
- Classifies fleet health into: online, offline, stale (inactive for over 24 hours), and disabled.
- Generates fleet totals plus a per-device snapshot of issues.
- Sends the summary JSON to OpenAI to produce a concise HTML report that includes risks, top problem devices, and recommendations.
- Emails the AI-generated HTML report via Gmail to your configured recipients.
Use cases
- Daily operational monitoring for SaaS platforms managing connected devices in Azure IoT Hub.
- Quick detection of device drop-offs (offline/stale) and disabled assets—before they impact customers.
- Automated reporting for automation engineers and platform teams who want consistent fleet health updates without manual querying.
Technical details
- Schedule: Runs daily at 9:00 AM
- Azure IoT Hub: Uses a short-lived SAS token + IoT Hub device query REST API
- OpenAI: Converts fleet health JSON into an AI-generated HTML executive summary
- Gmail: Sends the HTML report to specified recipients
- n8n nodes mentioned: set, code, gmail, switch, data table, sticky note
Setup required: Provide an Azure IoT Hub connection string with registry read permissions (e.g., a shared access policy such as registryRead), add OpenAI credentials and select a model, then configure Gmail OAuth2 and recipient email addresses.
