Get daily “wind-pest” alerts to Slack using GBIF + Open-Meteo + Gemini (built with n8n)
This n8n automation checks GBIF every morning for recent invasive/introduced pest occurrences near your farm, compares them with local wind conditions from Open-Meteo, and sends a concise, prioritized scouting alert directly to Slack using Google Gemini.
What this workflow does
- Runs daily at 6 AM on a schedule.
- Uses your farm coordinates (latitude/longitude), plus configurable search radius, lookback window, and wind-alignment tolerance.
- Queries the GBIF Occurrence Search API for recent invasive/introduced pest occurrences within the configured distance of the farm.
- When nearby occurrences are found, fetches recent wind speed and direction for the farm location from the Open-Meteo API.
- Calculates average wind direction and determines whether winds could carry pests toward the farm by checking alignment with the bearing from the occurrence to the farm.
- Sends only wind-aligned threats for review—if at least one aligned threat exists, the workflow forwards the threat data to a Google Gemini-powered agent to draft a short, prioritized Slack message.
- Posts the generated alert text to the configured Slack channel for your field scouts.
Use cases
- Daily monitoring for invasive pest introductions in your scouting region, with alerts that account for wind direction.
- Reducing scouting guesswork by routing only wind-aligned GBIF findings to Slack.
- Automation engineers deploying a production-ready workflow using n8n, HTTP requests, and AI-generated summaries.
Technical details
- n8n nodes/tools: if, set, code, slack, sticky note, http request
- Integrations: GBIF Occurrence Search API, Open-Meteo API, Slack API, Google Gemini (Google PaLM) for alert drafting
- Configurable inputs: farm latitude/longitude, radius, lookback days, alignment tolerance, and target Slack channel
Setup note: add your GBIF query parameters, configure Google Gemini API credentials, and set your Slack destination channel in the workflow.
