Fix keyword cannibalization with an automated Google Search Console audit—then get a weekly action email
This n8n workflow detects when multiple URLs compete for the same Google query (keyword cannibalization), confirms whether the overlap is real using redirect/canonical/hreflang signals, asks OpenAI to recommend the best page to own the query, and emails you a weekly Gmail digest of what to fix.
What this workflow does
- Runs weekly (Mondays) or on-demand — ideal after a site migration.
- Pulls Search Console data — queries the Google Search Console Search Analytics API for two 28-day windows, grouped by query and page.
- Finds candidate overlaps — looks for queries where multiple site URLs appear, and filters out irrelevant operator queries (e.g., site:) and long zero-click AI Mode prompts.
- Verifies overlap reality per URL — fetches each distinct URL once (without following redirects) to extract HTTP status, Location header, canonical URL, and hreflang alternates.
- Classifies the reason — identifies redirect, canonical duplicate, hreflang/locale alternate, or a true overlap, and suppresses pairs already reported unless impressions have grown significantly.
- Uses OpenAI to recommend actions — sends only real, reportable overlaps to an OpenAI-compatible chat model to decide which URL should keep ownership and what to do with the other.
- Builds history + sends a digest — upserts results into an n8n Data Table and emails a ruled-out summary plus an actionable shortlist via Gmail.
Use cases
- After migrations: quickly spot new cannibalization patterns caused by URL changes.
- SEO triage: prioritize which duplicate or conflicting pages need canonical/redirect/locale cleanup.
- SaaS operator workflows: get weekly, inbox-ready reporting without manual Search Console exporting.
Technical details
- Integrations: Google Search Console (Search Analytics API), OpenAI-compatible chat model, Gmail
- n8n nodes/logic: if, set, code, no op, merge (plus scheduling and Data Table upserts)
Keyword cannibalization isn’t just a report—it’s actionable. Automate detection, verification, prioritization, and a weekly email workflow in n8n.
