Fix low-CTR SEO titles automatically—using n8n, Google Search Console, OpenAI, and Google Sheets
If your pages are ranking but not earning clicks, this n8n workflow pinpoints the biggest CTR offenders in Google Search Console and generates improved SEO titles and meta descriptions with OpenAI. Suggestions are logged to Google Sheets for review, with an optional step to write approved updates back to WordPress (Yoast or Rank Math).
What this workflow does
- Runs weekly (and hourly for approvals): The weekly run finds new opportunities; the hourly run processes rows marked as approved in Google Sheets.
- Prevents repeat suggestions: It reads the existing “SEO Log” tab in Google Sheets and applies a cooldown window so the same URL isn’t repeatedly re-suggested after updates.
- Identifies underperforming pages: Using the Google Search Console Search Analytics API, it scores pages by missed clicks versus a position-based CTR benchmark and selects the worst offenders.
- Maps candidates to WordPress content: It matches URLs to WordPress posts/pages by slug and maps each candidate to a WordPress ID and content type for optional write-back.
-
Generates title + meta using real query data: For each candidate URL, it pulls top queries from GSC, fetches live HTML to extract the current title, meta description, and H1, then uses OpenAI Chat to produce:
- a new SEO title
- an alternative title
- a meta description (including a length check)
- Logs to Google Sheets for review: Each suggestion is appended with status set to “pending”.
- Applies approved changes (optional): On hourly runs, it updates Yoast/Rank Math meta fields via the WordPress REST API and marks rows “applied”, or “manual” when write-back is disabled or the page can’t be matched.
Use cases
- Improve click-through rate for existing ranking pages without guessing.
- Maintain an editorial workflow: draft in Sheets, approve, then auto-apply to WordPress.
- SaaS SEO teams automating GSC-driven title optimization at scale.
