Automatically score motorsports tech inspections, classify outcomes with OpenAI, and notify your team in real time
This n8n workflow ingests trackside motorsports tech-inspection submissions via webhook, applies expiry-based safety scoring per equipment item, uses OpenAI to classify the overall result (Pass/Conditional/Fail/Disqualify), then records everything to Google Sheets and alerts crews in Slack—while routing outcomes to a race-control timing API.
What this workflow does
- Receives inspection data: Accepts a POST request containing car details, inspector notes, and an array of safety-equipment items from a tech-inspection app.
- Scores each safety item: Splits the equipment array into individual items, calculates days-to-expiry, and determines item-level pass/fail using class-specific renewal cycles.
- Creates a compliance summary: Adds a human-readable class/rating label to each item and aggregates results into a consolidated per-car compliance outcome.
- Classifies the inspection outcome with OpenAI: Sends the compliance summary and inspector notes to an OpenAI-powered text classifier to route into Pass, Conditional-Pass-Rework, Fail, or Disqualify.
-
Writes and routes results: Populates an
inspectionCategoryfield and follows the matching outcome path. - Posts to race-control timing API: For Pass, checks the provided grid-eligibility cutoff timestamp and includes a gridEligible flag in the API result.
- Escalates and records: For Conditional-Pass-Rework, Fail, and Disqualify, posts the corresponding outcome to the API; escalates Disqualify to a chief-steward Slack channel; then appends the final result to Google Sheets and notifies the tech-inspection crew on Slack.
Use cases
- Trackside teams automatically score safety equipment expiry and generate consistent inspection outcomes.
- Race control receives structured pass/fail updates instantly through the timing API.
- Prompts-based classification ensures inspector notes are reflected in the final Pass/Conditional/Fail/Disqualify decision.
Technical details
- n8n nodes/components: if, set, code, merge, Slack, switch (with the workflow routing based on OpenAI classification).
- Integrations: Webhook intake, OpenAI text classification, race-control timing API posting, Google Sheets archiving, and Slack notifications (including chief-steward escalation).
