Stop Unwanted Timed Jobs on Your n8n Staging Instance—Automatically Reported to Slack

This n8n API workflow runs nightly on your staging environment to detect published workflows that use schedule/interval/cron or polling triggers—and that are not allow-listed by tag. It can deactivate (unpublish) those jobs via the n8n API (optionally) and then sends a clear Slack report so your team stays in control.

What this workflow does

  • Runs every night at 02:00 using a Schedule trigger.
  • Sets configuration values such as allow-list tag name, instance label, dry-run mode, and whether to include polling triggers.
  • Uses the n8n API to list all active, published workflows on the staging instance.
  • Filters results by:
    • excluding the current workflow,
    • excluding workflows tagged with the allow-list tag,
    • keeping only workflows with schedule/interval/cron triggers or polling configurations.
  • If dry-run is disabled, it deactivates matching workflows via the n8n API.
  • Builds a summary report of discovered workflows (and unpublished actions if applicable) and posts it to Slack.

Use cases

  • Reduce risk on staging by preventing accidental activation of timed jobs that aren’t explicitly allow-listed.
  • Audit and control scheduled/polling workflows in multi-team n8n setups.
  • Give operators visibility through Slack updates before enforcing deactivations.

Technical details

  • Nodes/tech stack: if, set, code, n8n, slack, sticky note
  • Integrations: n8n API (staging base URL such as https://staging.example.com/api/v1) and Slack
  • Credentials: n8n API key + Slack credential targeting your chosen channel

Tip: Keep dryRun set to true until the Slack report output matches your expectations, then switch it off to enforce deactivation.
