Get instant email alerts when any n8n workflow fails—plus a plain-English hint about what likely went wrong
Stop guessing when your n8n automations break. This Error Trigger Email Alerts workflow sends you an email the moment a workflow fails, including the workflow name, the failed node, the original error, and a human-friendly suggestion (for example: expired login, rate limit, or timeout) with a direct link to the failed run.
What this workflow does
- Starts on failure: The Error Trigger node activates whenever any other workflow on your n8n instance fails.
- Reads the failure: A Code node inspects the error message and the failed node’s name.
- Detects common issues: It checks for frequent problems such as expired logins (401), rate limits (429), and timeouts.
- Generates a clear hint: Instead of only raw error text, the workflow writes a short plain-English hint describing what probably broke and what to try next.
- Sends the notification: The Send Email node emails you the workflow name, failed node, original error, the hint, and a link to the run.
Use cases
- SaaS operators: Receive immediate alerts when critical workflows (webhooks, scheduled jobs) fail.
- Automation engineers: Quickly identify whether failures are due to expired credentials, API rate limits, or timeouts.
- Teams managing many workflows: Centralize failure notifications without manually monitoring each automation.
Technical details
- Nodes / tech: Error Trigger, Code, Send Email, Sticky Note
- Email integration: Requires an SMTP or Gmail account (configured in the Send Email node) and a valid “from” address.
- Setup essentials: Update placeholder recipient/sender values, configure the email credential, then select this workflow as the “Error Workflow” in your other workflows.
- Customization: Edit the hint text and add additional error patterns in the Build message node for the errors you see most.
Requirements: An n8n version that includes the Error Trigger node, plus an SMTP/Gmail email account.
