Stop silent automation failures—get instant Slack/Telegram alerts from n8n

This n8n Global Error Handler with Slack/Telegram Alerts monitors your tagged workflows for errors and “silent” breakage. When a workflow fails, gets deactivated, or stops producing successful executions beyond a defined threshold, it sends a clear alert to Slack/Discord/Teams (via incoming webhook) and optionally to Telegram.

What this workflow does

  • Receives error events from other n8n workflows that you configure to use it as their Error Workflow.
  • Normalizes error payloads into a consistent alert format, including workflow details, node name, error message, and an execution link.
  • Runs every 15 minutes to detect “silence monitor” issues—workflows that are tagged for monitoring but no longer produce successful runs.
  • Uses the n8n API to fetch recent executions and workflows, determines the most recent successful execution per workflow, and compares it to a per-workflow (or default) silence threshold.
  • Detects deactivated or stalled workflows and triggers alerts while throttling repeat notifications to avoid alert spam.
  • Sends human-readable alerts in English by default to your Slack/Discord/Teams webhook, with an optional Telegram message when enabled.

Use cases

  • Catch production incidents when a critical n8n workflow errors unexpectedly.
  • Detect “silent” failures where runs continue but successful outputs stop (API outages, credential expiry, upstream changes).
  • Confirm monitoring coverage after disabling a workflow or making risky edits—without waiting for manual checks.
  • Keep SaaS operations teams informed with actionable execution links and node-level context.

Technical details

  • n8n API credentials for fetching executions and workflows.
  • Nodes/tech used: set, code, http request, telegram, and supporting elements like a sticky note.
  • Alert delivery via Slack/Discord/Teams incoming webhook and optional Telegram (Telegram credentials + chat ID).

Setup checklist

  • Create an n8n API credential (Settings → n8n API) and add it to the nodes that call the API.
  • Paste your Slack/Discord/Teams webhook URL into the HTTP Request node, or enable the Telegram node.
  • Activate the workflow, then set it as the Error Workflow in each workflow you want monitored.
