Automatically escalate incident SLAs in n8n—webhook in, multi-level paging out
This n8n workflow receives incident/ticket data via a POST webhook, calculates SLA response and resolution deadlines, evaluates breach risk, then triggers a Level 1–3 escalation chain using HTTP requests—finally returning an orchestration report to the caller.
What this workflow does
- Receives incident data through a webhook endpoint (POST).
- Validates required fields, derives a ticket ID, and calculates SLA response and SLA resolution deadlines based on severity.
- Determines status by comparing current time to those deadlines, classifying the ticket as on-track, at-risk, or breached.
- Builds an escalation plan that selects which escalation levels (1–3) to execute depending on severity and breach status.
- Executes Level 1–3 actions as HTTP POST requests, inserting short waits between levels and recording the resulting status code for each executed level.
- Returns an orchestration report via the webhook response: 200 on success, 207 on partial failure, including breach details and which escalation actions ran.
Use cases
- When your ticketing/incident system receives a new alert, POST it to n8n to automatically escalate according to SLA rules.
- For customer-impacting incidents, switch from response reminders to higher-level escalations if deadlines are approaching or missed.
- SaaS operators can standardize SLA enforcement with consistent, severity-based escalation logic across teams.
Technical details
- Nodes used: code, wait, webhook, sticky note, HTTP request, respond to webhook.
- Integrations: HTTP POST targets for escalation levels (the template defaults to httpbin.org—update to your real notification/paging/ticketing endpoints).
- Payload expectations: ensure incoming fields (e.g., title, severity/priority, createdAt, assignee, customer) match what your source system sends.
Perfect for n8n automation engineers and SaaS operators who need reliable incident SLA escalation with clear, webhook-returned orchestration outcomes.
