Put your approved production tools behind an MCP server—secured with validation, audit logs, and Slack approvals

This n8n workflow exposes n8n as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that lets MCP clients request production tools—while rigorously validating inputs, recording every call for audit logging, and routing any destructive actions through Slack-based human approval before executing narrowly scoped HTTP API requests.

What this workflow does

  • Receives MCP tool requests via the MCP Server Trigger (and an associated webhook endpoint) from an MCP client (e.g., Claude Desktop / Claude Code).
  • Validates tool names and required parameters against an allow-list. Invalid requests are rejected immediately.
  • Audit-logs valid tool calls by recording an audit payload before any production action runs.
  • Routes by tool type: read-only tools execute directly; destructive tools are sent to Slack for approval before continuing.
  • Executes the approved tool by calling the corresponding production HTTP API (deploy service, query production data/database, search a knowledge base, or issue a refund).
  • Normalizes results, appends the execution outcome to the audit payload, and returns the tool result back to the MCP client.

Use cases

  • Allow an MCP agent to safely query production and search internal knowledge with strict validation and audit trails.
  • Require human approval in Slack for actions like refunds or other destructive operations.
  • Provide controlled deploy service capabilities through an MCP client without exposing raw endpoints.

Technical details

  • n8n nodes/logic: if, code, no op, wait, slack, switch
  • MCP integration: MCP Server Trigger + webhook endpoint for MCP tool calls
  • Security controls: allow-list validation, audit payload recording, Slack approval gate for destructive actions
  • HTTP execution: deploy service, internal data/query, knowledge base search, payments/refunds via HTTP Request steps using header auth credentials

Perfect for: n8n users, automation engineers, and SaaS operators who want production tool access that is measurable, controlled, and MCP-friendly.
