Never miss a new SEC filing—get automated EDGAR email alerts in n8n
This n8n workflow checks the SEC EDGAR system every weekday evening for new 8-K, 10-Q, and 10-K filings (including amendments) for your watchlist of company CIKs, and emails you direct links to anything newly found—within your selected lookback window.
What this workflow does
- Runs on a schedule: executes every weekday at 18:00.
- Loads your settings: company CIKs, form types to track, lookbackDays, SEC User-Agent, and SMTP email details.
- Validates SEC User-Agent: ensures the SEC-required User-Agent includes a real contact email before making any SEC requests.
- Fetches EDGAR submission data: retrieves public submissions JSON from data.sec.gov, rate-limited to about 5 requests per second.
- Filters + deduplicates: keeps only the watched form types (including amendments), only those within the lookback window, and avoids duplicate notifications using stored “seen filings” history (by accession number).
- Sends email alerts: sends a plain-text SMTP email with one line per new filing (and includes CIK-related data issues if any), and skips sending when there’s nothing new.
Use cases
- Track a portfolio of public companies and be alerted to new 8-K events quickly.
- Monitor quarterly and annual reporting (10-Q, 10-K) across multiple CIKs with a consistent notification cadence.
- Catch amended filings automatically without manual checking.
Technical details
- Requirements: n8n 2.35+ and an SMTP account (no API key—EDGAR is accessed via SEC public endpoints).
- Nodes used: set, code, split out, http request, email send, sticky note.
- Important: keep the workflow running in the same n8n instance to preserve the stored “seen filings” history and prevent repeated emails.
