Turn Slack into an IT service catalog—backed by Postgres workflows

This n8n workflow creates an internal IT service catalog inside Slack. Employees request services via a Slack modal, approvals happen through Slack DMs, and every request is tracked in Postgres—either triggering an external automation HTTP endpoint or placing the work into an IT queue for manual completion.

What this workflow does

  • Receives Slack requests securely: Handles a Slack slash command and interactive payloads via webhooks, verifying each request using the Slack signing secret.
  • Builds a catalog from Postgres: When an employee runs /it, the workflow loads active catalog items from Postgres, then opens a Slack modal for service selection by category.
  • Generates request forms dynamically: After selection, it loads the service definition from Postgres and updates the modal with a service-specific request form.
  • Validates and records requests: On submission, it validates required fields, creates the request and audit entries in Postgres, and notifies the requester in Slack.
  • Routes approvals with Slack DMs: If approval is required, it sends the approver a Slack DM with Approve and Deny buttons and stores the decision back in Postgres.
  • Executes or queues work: For approved requests, it either calls a configured HTTP automation endpoint and records the result, or posts the request to an IT queue channel with a Mark complete button.
  • Closes the loop: When IT marks the queued request complete, it updates request status in Postgres, updates the Slack queue message, and notifies the requester.

Use cases

  • Employees request access, devices, or internal changes through a consistent Slack /it experience.
  • Approvals and audit trails are stored in Postgres, with approvers interacting directly in Slack DMs.
  • Approved work is either automated via an external HTTP endpoint or handled in an IT queue channel with manual completion.
