Detect decaying WordPress SEO in Google Search Console—then automatically generate OpenAI refresh briefs
If your WordPress pages are losing clicks month over month, this n8n workflow pinpoints exactly which URLs are slipping and creates evidence-based GPT refresh briefs you can track in Google Sheets—weekly or on-demand.
What this workflow does
This n8n automation runs every Monday (scheduled) or can be started manually. It then:
- Loads configuration values and reads the existing “Refresh Log” from Google Sheets.
- Queries Google Search Console for page-level performance comparing the last 28 days vs the prior 28 days.
- Flags WordPress pages where clicks decline beyond a configured threshold, while excluding URLs already in progress or within a cooldown.
- Looks up each flagged URL in WordPress by slug (posts and pages) to capture the WordPress ID, content type, and last-modified date when available.
- Fetches query-level performance for both time windows and compiles the top lost-click queries plus queries that are new or growing.
- Pulls the article content from the WordPress REST API (or downloads live HTML when needed), then extracts headings and plain text for context.
- Uses OpenAI to generate a structured refresh brief (priority, diagnosis, actions, new sections, and a suggested title) and appends it to Google Sheets with status set to pending.
- On each run, checks rows marked as refreshed, stamps refreshed_at if missing, and continues the refresh measurement flow based on the logged results.
Use cases
- SaaS operators managing large WordPress content libraries who need ongoing SEO decay detection and refresh planning.
- SEO teams using Google Search Console trends to prioritize content updates with evidence.
- n8n users who want a repeatable pipeline: detect → diagnose with page + query data → generate briefs → log outcomes in Google Sheets.
Technical details
- Integrations: Google Search Console, Google Sheets, WordPress (REST API + live HTML fallback), OpenAI.
- n8n nodes/tools used: if, set, code, sticky note, HTTP request, Google Sheets.
