Route execution in n8n with an If/Else decision, branch merge, and a safe No-Op end

This n8n workflow lets you manually set a boolean flag (val), automatically routes to the correct branch using an if check, merges the result back into a single output, and then ends without performing any external action.

What this workflow does

  • Runs manually using a Manual Trigger.
  • Sets a boolean field named val to control the decision.
  • Evaluates the condition: it checks whether val equals true.
  • Routes down one of two branches based on the result of that comparison.
  • Creates branch-specific output data—each branch prepares the output you want for that path (the other branch leaves its own data untouched).
  • Merges the two possible paths using a Merge setup, outputting only the branch that was taken.
  • Ends safely with a No-Op (no external calls or side effects).

Use cases

  • Test-driven branching: quickly verify which path your logic should take by toggling val in a manual run.
  • Conditional output shaping: return different structured data from two branches while keeping a single merged response.
  • Workflow prototyping: draft decision logic in n8n and finalize later—without any external integration calls.
  • SaaS operations tooling: generate the correct “result payload” based on a boolean condition, then hand it off to downstream steps.

Technical details

  • Nodes used: Manual Trigger, Set, If, No-Op, Merge, Sticky Note
  • Decision field: boolean val
  • Merge behavior: outputs only the selected branch

Set the desired value of val to control which branch is taken, and adjust the fields created in each branch to match the data you want to output.
