Mask PII with Nexis, then summarize support tickets with OpenAI—automatically
This n8n workflow anonymizes support ticket text using Nexis, sends only the masked content to an OpenAI chat model for a one-sentence summary and category, and routes any PII masking failures to a separate review output.
What this workflow does
- Manual run trigger: Start by clicking Execute workflow to generate example support tickets (or swap in your own help desk source).
- Nexis PII masking: For each ticket, the workflow sends the ticket text to n8n-nodes-nexis to mask detected personal data.
- Allow list support: Keep specific terms readable by configuring the allow list in the Nexis anonymization step.
- Failure handling: If Nexis can’t process a ticket, the workflow routes it to a review output with the error details.
-
OpenAI ticket summarization: Send the masked ticket text to an OpenAI chat model to produce:
- a one-sentence summary
- a category: Billing, Technical, Delivery, or Other
- Outputs: Ticket ID, masked text, count of masked entities, and the AI summary/category.
Use cases
- Help desk ops: prepare safe, privacy-compliant AI summaries for internal review.
- SaaS support teams: categorize inbound tickets (Billing/Technical/Delivery/Other) after anonymization.
- Automation engineers: build an n8n workflow that separates “success” vs “needs review” for PII masking.
Technical details
- Integrations/credentials: n8n-nodes-nexis (Nexis API credential) + OpenAI (chat model credential).
- n8n components: manual trigger, set, code, plus supporting steps for routing and output formatting (including review handling).
- Workflow setup includes selecting the Country/Regulation option for Nexis anonymization and configuring the allow list as needed.
