Post Your n8n Workflow Diagrams to Slack Every Week—Automatically

This n8n automation generates a fresh visual diagram of a selected workflow every Monday at 9:00 AM and posts it directly to your chosen Slack channel as a PNG file via Pixtex. Perfect for keeping teams aligned with the latest workflow changes.

What this workflow does

  • Schedules itself: Runs every Monday at 9:00 AM using a schedule trigger.
  • Fetches your workflow: Retrieves the selected workflow’s JSON from your n8n instance using the n8n API.
  • Renders a diagram with Pixtex: Sends the workflow JSON to Pixtex and renders the diagram as a PNG image.
  • Posts to Slack: Uploads the rendered image as a file to the specified Slack channel.

Use cases

  • Weekly visibility for automation engineers: quickly review what changed and how workflows are structured.
  • SaaS operations reporting: keep stakeholders informed with consistent, diagram-based documentation.
  • Documentation hygiene: reduce manual effort to generate and share workflow diagrams during iterative development.
  • Change tracking: compare weekly Slack uploads to understand updates over time.

Technical details

  • Trigger: Schedule Trigger (runs weekly, Monday 9:00 AM)
  • Integrations/Credentials:
    • n8n API key (required): to fetch the workflow JSON from your n8n instance (Settings → API)
    • Slack credential (required): must have permission to upload files
    • Pixtex (optional): renders without any Pixtex account; you can optionally add an API key for higher limits or to adjust rendering options
  • Nodes used: n8n, Slack, n8n-nodes-pixtexpixtex, sticky note, schedule trigger

Setup & customization

Configure an n8n API credential and select the workflow ID to document. Add a Slack credential and choose the target channel. For customization, you can change rendering options (background, icon pack, scale, layout, padding) and schedule/trigger behavior. Optionally switch the render output to PDF instead of a Slack image.
