Keep your Mastodon bookmarks synced to Wallabag—automatically, every 5 minutes
This n8n workflow fetches new Mastodon bookmarks and saves them into Wallabag, using an n8n Data Table to track the last processed bookmark ID and avoid duplicates by checking Wallabag before creating new entries.
What this workflow does
- Runs on a schedule: the workflow executes every five minutes.
- Tracks progress with n8n Data Table: it reads the last processed Mastodon bookmark ID (min_id) and uses a default value on the first run.
-
Fetches only new bookmarks: it calls the Mastodon API endpoint
/api/v1/bookmarksusing min_id to retrieve newer bookmarks. - Stops when there are no new items: if none are returned, it ends the run early.
- Updates min_id for next time: it extracts pagination values from the Mastodon Link response header (including the newest min_id) and writes it back to the Data Table.
- Selects the best URL per post: for each bookmarked post, it determines a URL by preferring the link preview card URL, otherwise using the first non-mention/non-hashtag link, or falling back to the post URL.
- Prevents duplicates in Wallabag: it checks whether the chosen URL already exists in Wallabag; if not, it creates a new Wallabag entry with metadata (title, author, language, content, origin URL, and published date).
Use cases
- Archive Mastodon bookmarks in Wallabag for easy reading later.
- Maintain a consistent “save and forget” workflow across Mastodon and Wallabag without manual copying.
- Run a low-maintenance SaaS-like content sync using scheduled n8n automation.
